When buying, building orrenovating your home, make sure all roofing materials are fire resistant.
Never leave candles or other open flames unattended.
Cigarette and cigar butts should be put out with water before dumping them in the trash.
Never leave hot irons or stovetops on. Turn them off after each use.
Regularly clear and dispose of dry or dead leaves and plants in your yard or areas near your home.
Install smoke alarms on every level of your home. Put them inside or near every bedroom. Test them monthly to make sure they work. Put in new batteries once a year. This will entitle you to discounts on your homeowners insurance.
Don't have deadbolts that lock with a key on the inside. You need to get out quickly if a fire starts. A missing key could trap you inside. Also make sure windows open easily if a quick escape becomes necessary.
Make a fire escape plan. Find two exits out of every room if possible. Choose a meeting place outside. Practice makes perfect – hold a family fire drill at least twice each year.
