Burglary Safety Tips

• Make sure all exterior doors are fitted with proper locks. Install 1-inch deadbolt locks on all exterior doors.
• If you hear an unexpected knock at the door, check to see who it is before opening it. Never open your door to strangers! Teach your children no to do this either.
• Do not leave extra keys in obvious outdoor locations. It is best to give extra keys to a family member or a close/trusted neighbour.
• Keep garage doors closed.
• Keep drapes and blinds closed in rooms where there is expensive equipment. Don't advertise the items in your home.
• Store cash, jewelry and other valuables in a safe or safety deposit box instead of leaving them lying around your home.
• Don't leave notes on the door for persons visiting your house when you are not at home. These alert burglars that you are not there.
• Make sure your property is well lit. Motion detecting lights are also helpful and reduce your electricity costs.
